Same time, same place

Get a grip, Paige. She tried to slow her racing heart, to no avail. The moment she’d locked eyes with Brendan MacDonald tonight she’d been a goner. How was it possible for the guy to be even better looking than he’d been five years ago? He seemed bigger than she remembered him, his eyes the same ocean blue as her son’s. And now he was staring at her like she was the answer to every question he’d ever had. Like he planned to stick around forever and play family. Yeah, right. Because it worked out so goddamn well five years before.

Maybe he was telling the truth. Maybe his agent never told him about the calls. About the baby photos. Should she give him the benefit of a doubt? Could she afford to let go of the anger that kept her going on her own for this long?

Her heart screamed yes. Her brain, however, was screaming in equal volume, telling her to proceed with caution. She’d read enough articles to know it wouldn’t be wise, or good for her son’s long term mental health, to jump into anything too quickly with any man. Even if the man was her son’s father. She needed to think with her mom-brain and not her heart. Her heart got her into this situation in the first place and obviously had no idea what was good for it.

“C’mon, little man. Let’s go tackle your zipper.” She took his hand and tugged him toward the locker room. Declan resisted her tug, holding his ground and staring at Brendan.

“Wait a sec, Mommy. You need to say goodbye to your friend, don’t you?” His innocent little face looked up at her with concern, those blue eyes looking much wiser than she felt at the moment. “The teacher always says you can’t be rude to your friends, or pretty soon you won’t have any left.”

“No, you’re right sweetie. I don’t want to be rude to my… friend.” Paige caught Brendan’s lips quirking at her son’s chastisement. “Go on and I’ll catch up with you in a minute.”

Declan ran off and Paige turned her attention back to Brendan. “He has no idea, obviously. And, um, I’d like to keep it that way, at least for a little while. Until you decide.”

His brows pulled together. “Decide what?”

“Whether this is what you want.” She swallowed the sudden lump in her throat and pushed out the words she needed to say. “I know your life is in Missouri, and I’m not going to ask you to give up anything. But if you decide you want to be part of Declan’s world, I won’t stop you. It was never my intention to keep him from you. When you never called… and then never returned my calls…” She shook her head as if to clear it, leaving the sentence dangling between them, unfinished.

“Paige, I…”

“There you are, Paige Wheeler. You’re a hard woman to pin down.” The woman bustling toward them was a botoxed older blonde with a shrewd look in her eyes.
